Brittany

The dogs we raise are American Brittanys, as opposed to the French Brittany. The American Brittany is a leggy dog, definitely not a couch potato, that is highly trainable and people oriented.
You don’t have to be an avid hunter to own one of these dogs; however, the Brittany will hunt with or without you – squirrels, chipmunks, tennis balls, or whatever you have that appears like game. We strongly recommend a fenced in yard or an exercise area for these dogs because they love to run and need this exercise. |

Physical Attributes/Health
Our Brittanys are a compact, closely knit dog of medium size, between 30 – 45 lbs. and from 17 to 19 inches of height at the shoulders. The medium size makes this dog very appealing to people. Some Brittanys are born with docked tails; ours are docked at around 2 – 3 days after birth. The docked tail also keeps the dog from knocking over everything in its way. The type of dog we strive for has a straight coat – long enough to protect it from briars but short enough to keep it from catching burrs and such while in the field.
The Brittany is a very clean dog as far as health ailments are concerned. They will usually live happy, productive lives to around 12 to 14 years of age.

In other words, this dog hunts for the bird, and with training, points it, waits for you to come in and flush, and after the shot, it will retrieve the bird on land or in water. In Europe, these dogs have also been known to hunt rabbits and hares.
The Brittany is a very friendly dog with a great disposition wanting to please its owner. Some Brittanys are very soft and for these dogs mild correction goes a long way.
Unlike many sporting breeds, the American Brittany has not divided into different types within the breed. The Show Dog Champion can be a Field Champion and vice-versa. This is called a Dual Champion. There are more dual champions in the Brittany breed than any other breed.

Lines at Kirby Mountain Sporting Dogs
Our Brittanys come from the Who’s Who in the Brittany world. Our lines come from the 1977 NAFC 1978 NFC/AFC/DC Perry’s Rustic Prince with an infusion from the great FC AFC Salute to Stub. They also include FC AFC Echo Echo’s Echo and soon-to-be in the Brittany hall of fame FC Ray’s Pride of Coos. Besides being giants in the performance world, these dogs were tremendous hunting dogs and spent many hours in the owner’s homes. We are now breeding the sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of these great dogs. |
